Radio
Free Peggy Broadcasts to the Free World.
My dad has heard many
stories from Beacon's locals about the scariest
wipe-out or the largest wave or about gray whales
coming to close to shore and right into the surf line-up
or rumors of great white sharks... but one story he heard just chills him to the
bone. He often pales when telling it...
A surfer was talking
about the Kahuna
Bob surfing school and it looked like a
class was just finishing. Peggy, the Kahuna's
wife, had an electronic megaphone left over from a surf
contest the previous weekend. A number of surf
school students remained on the beach and rather than
run down to the beach to retrieve them, Peggy
whipped out the megaphone... 150 decibels later,
commanded "Get out of the water, NOW!"
Every
surfer in the water, between Grandview
and Stone
Steps, was quivering, and scrambling for
shore, as they heard the radio free Peggy barking
commands from atop the bluff.
(Hmm, just when you
thought it was safe...)
My dad sez that even
though she is not an avid surfer, she is a master at
studying those who do surf and critiquing their ability. He often comments on
how appreciative he is in hearing, "You don't bend
your knees enough," for the 40th time.
