Beacon's Stairway Update: Tentative design will fill the hill, close the trail for 4-6 months, and provide a new safer path.

This is how Beacon's appears now. To see the proposed architectural renderings visit these two links:

Beacon's Design 2 BEACONS-OPT-A-ParkingOpt2 11x17.pdf

The first of many City of Encinitas meetings revealed the first details of the proposed changes to the path and beacons. Here is the Citizen Participation Plan from the City of Encinitas.  Here are the highlights and here are what locals have written stating their opinions:

  • The bluff is too geologically unstable to do wood stairs like at Swami's, D Street or Grandview Beach.

  • A protective seawall will be built at the base of the bluff

  • A permanent life guard tower will be built

  • The face of the bluff at Beacon's Beach will be filled in with a clay/dirt soil fill and compacted.

  • A winding pathway made of a "comfortable" aggregate will traverse the bluff after the fill dirt is complete.

  • The sidewalk at the top of the bluff will be backed up to provide a margin of safety and subsequently the parking lot will be redesigned with a likely scenario that will cause pull in parking directly from Neptune Avenue.

  • The project could take as long as 4-6 months to complete and it is anticipated that the beach access will be closed.

You can read the full minutes of the meetings between Beacon's locals and the City of Encinitas:

  1. Meeting with Surfrider Foundation

  2. Meeting with Surfriders and Swami's Surfing Association

  3. Meeting with immediate neighbors

With regards to the proposed layouts, the city states
>>Beacon's Neighbors,
Thank you again for attending last night's public meeting. Based on input received at the 5 meetings held with various groups interested in this project, we will be making some design refinements before finalizing the plan and proceeding with the approval process.
As requested, I am attaching a copy of the preferred alternative with two different parking options shown at the public meeting. Parking and circulation is one of the major issues we are reevaluating.<<

Read the comments other Beacon's locals have made about the new path.

Look at pictures of the Beacon's path as it is now.

If you have comments about the proposed layout, please email your comments and I will then forward to the city and post them as well to this web page. thanks :)
